Matthew Sweet the man is Lincoln, Nebraska born and bred. Matthew Sweet the musician hails from Athens, Georgia, where he moved to attend school and become a part of the burgeoning music scene in the early 1980’s.
An early collaborator of both Michael and Lynda Stipe’s, Matthew tried going it alone twice before striking alt-rock gold with 1991’s Girlfriend. Two years later, he released the less poppy, more complex Altered Beast.
When the 100% Fun tour rolled through Richmond, Virginia in 1995, I used my nascent label hook-ups to get into the meet and greet. Matt totally hit on my girlfriend at the time, which could have been awesome if he had said to her “Honey believe me, I’d sure like to call you my girlfriend,” but he didn’t, so it just ended up being creepy.
